India: On the State Visit of His Excellency Lyonchen Jigmi Y. Thinley, the Prime
Minister of Bhutan Thinley to India
His Excellency Lyonchen Jigmi Y. Thinley, the Prime Minister of Bhutan will pay a State
Visit to India from July 14-17, 2008. This would be his first visit outside Bhutan as the
first democratically elected Prime Minister after Bhutan's historic transition to a
democratic constitutional monarchy.
2. The Prime Minister will be accompanied by Mrs. Thinley and a high-level delegation
that includes H.E. Lyonpo Khandu Wangchuck, Minister for Economic Affairs, H.E. Lyonpo
Ugyen Tshering, Minister for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Lyonpo Wangdi Norbu, Finance Minister,
and other senior officials from the Royal Government of Bhutan.
3. India and Bhutan share a very special relationship which has roots in our history
and culture and has found new dynamism in mutually beneficial cooperation. This
relationship is characterised by close consultations, mutual trust and understanding. It
is further sustained by the tradition of regular visits and exchange of views at the
highest levels between the two countries.
4. During the visit, the Prime Minister of Bhutan will call on the President and the
Vice President and will hold talks with the Prime Minister. Chairperson of United
Progressive Alliance, External Affairs Minister, Leader of Opposition, and Deputy
Chairman, Planning Commission, will call on the Prime Minister of Bhutan. Prime Minister
will host a State Banquet in honour of the visiting dignitary.
