Russia: On the Work of the Coordination Segment of ECOSOC

The Coordination Segment of the Annual Substantive Session of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) being held in New York has concluded its work.

The focus of attention at this stage of the Council's work was enhancing systemic coherence in realizing the UN socioeconomic agenda with reliance upon the capabilities of the renewed ECOSOC. An in-depth review of the role of the Council in promoting the integrated and coordinated implementation of the decisions of major UN conferences and summits was carried out and a comprehensive assessment of the progress made in realizing the Ministerial Declaration of the High-Level Segment of the 2007 ECOSOC Session on strengthening the efforts to eradicate poverty and hunger was given.

The recent steep rise in world food prices gave prominence to food security in the debate, in the course of which the Russian delegation drew attention to the negative factors of impact on food price growth – the influx of speculative capital into agricultural produce markets and the speeded development of biofuels production – and accentuated the importance of carrying out a package of short-, medium- and long-term measures aimed at overcoming the food crisis and ensuring the sustainable development of world agriculture.
