Russia: Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov Meets with Abkhazian President Sergey Bagapsh (Georgia)

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov met on July 10 with visiting Abkhazian President Sergey Bagapsh.

During the conversation, the sides expressed serious concern over the new outbreak of tension in the Georgian-Abkhaz and Georgian-Ossetian zones of conflict due to provocative actions of the Georgian side. Bagapsh was informed of the politico-diplomatic steps taken by the Russian Federation, in particular at the UN and OSCE, in order to draw the world community's attention to the situation surrounding Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which Tbilisi's aggressive policy has put on the verge of a large-scale crisis.

Moscow and Sukhumi are convinced that a way out of the situation can be found only through the cessation of provocations and the signing, without delay, of documents on the nonuse of force in both conflicts, which in the case of Abkhazia must be accompanied by a complete withdrawal of Georgian troops from the Upper Kodori Valley. Only after this will it become possible to resume dialogue on confidence building, economic rehabilitation and other aspects of settlement.

In these circumstances the Russian Federation in accordance with the role laid upon it as the principal mediator in resolving both conflicts will continue its consistent peace-building efforts, designed to prevent events from developing in the region along catastrophic lines.
