Italy: Secretary of State Craxi visits Morocco

Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Stefania Craxi today concluded a two-day visit to Rabat during which she met with Foreign Minister Fassi Fihri, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Akharbach and other members of the Moroccan government.

Her various meetings offered an opportunity to review the main items on the international agenda and, in particular, the upcoming summit of heads of state and government planned for 13 July in Paris, at which the Mediterranean Union is to be launched.

Both Italy and Morocco reiterated the expectation that this initiative will lead to strengthening the partnership between the two shores of the Mediterranean on the basis of shared programmes capable of impacting on the development of those areas: "a unique instrument", Craxi underscored, "with the potential to put an end to extremism and fundamentalism".

During her meetings Secretary Craxi—who also met in the Embassy with representatives from the main Italian firms operating in Rabat, and later visited the Italian firm Pizzarotti/AlpiDeco's largest building site in Rabat—emphasised the need to strengthen economic cooperation: "With a view to creating an increasingly favourable context for our businesses by streamlining administrative and bureaucratic procedures"
