Latvian and Georgian Foreign Ministers to discuss current situation in Georgia (Abkhazia, South Ossetia)

On 11 July Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins will meet with Georgian Foreign Minister Ekaterine Tkeshelashvili, who will be in Latvia on an official visit. During the meeting, the foreign ministers are expected to review current issues in bilateral relations, including Latvian development co-operation projects in Georgia, the present relations between Georgia and the EU and their future prospects, and also the situation in the conflict areas of Georgia – Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

As part of the visit, two agreements between Latvian and Georgian governments are to be concluded. Foreign Minister Riekstins and his Georgian counterpart will sign an agreement between the two governments on the lifting of visa requirements for the holders of diplomatic and service passports. Latvian Minister of the Interior, Mareks Seglins, and Foreign Minister Tkeshelashvili will sign a bilateral agreement on the re-admission of individuals not meeting the requirements of entry or stay in the territory of the other state.

As an honorary guest, the Georgian Minister of Foreign Affairs will also take part in a meeting of the Foreign Policy Council, which is chaired by Mr Riekstins. The key topic of this meeting will be the current situation in Georgia. Members of the Foreign Policy Council will have the opportunity to listen to the opinion of the Georgian side about the situation in conflict regions and about the pace of reforms in the state on its course to Euro-Atlantic integration.

During the visit, Minister Tkeshelashvili is also scheduled to meet with President Valdis Zatlers and Saeima Speaker Gundars Daudze.
