Russia: Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs/State Secretary Grigory Karasin's Consultation with Ukrainian Acting First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Yuriy Kostenko

On July 10, a consultation between State Secretary, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Grigory Karasin and Yuriy Kostenko, the Acting First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, took place at the Ministry.

The two examined the most topical issues on the present agenda of Russian-Ukrainian cooperation.

Emphasis was given to the positive dynamics of economic and trade ties, which had been noted with satisfaction during the recent meeting in Moscow between Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who are co-chairs of the Economic Cooperation Committee of the Russian-Ukrainian Interstate Commission.

Problems standing in the way of positive bilateral interaction development also were touched on. The Russian side, in particular, drew attention to the inadmissibility of the unilateral actions of the Ukrainian side with regard to the presence of Russia's Black Sea Fleet on the territory of Ukraine and to the dangerous implications of the Ukrainian authorities' line on reviewing the common historical past and infringing upon the positions of the Russian language.

A schedule of bilateral political contacts to be held till the end of 2008 was discussed.

The consultation passed in a frank and businesslike spirit.
