more - osint - The U.N. refugee agency says inter-ethnic violence is increasing in eastern Chad. It says an interagency mission reports a recent spate of attacks in the Kerfi area, southwest of Goz Beida, has also extended to the Koukou area, southeast of the town of Goz Beida. Six agencies involved in the mission include the UNHCR, UNICEF and OXFAM. The mission went to the Kerfi area Thursday to investigate attacks on villages that reportedly killed more than 200 people and forced hundreds to flee. While there, the U.N. refugee agency says, the team traveled to the Koukou region where it found a pattern of burned villages. UNHCR spokesman, William Spindler, says vulnerable people, such as the elderly, hid in the bush while armed men on horseback raided their villages.

A European resolution, drafted by the U.N. Security Council's three E.U. members, proposes sanctions against Iran for defying an August 31 deadline to stop enriching uranium. Russia has proposed major changes to the draft resolution, including removing all references to Iran's Bushehr nuclear plant.

more - osint - Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Larijani said here Wednesday evening that a draft resolution approved by UN Security Council members declaring Iran in defiance of their demand to halt uranium enrichment and seeking to impose sanctions is a "psychological move." Dismissing the hue and cry over Iran's nuclear activities, he termed the West's claim that Iran is getting nearer to its goal of acquiring atomic weapons as unthinkable. The West's, particularly the US', concerns over Iran's nuclear program have no legal basis, Larijan said during a TV interview Wednesday night. After two years of voluntary suspension, the West now urges Iran to end all its nuclear activities, he said, adding that Tehran suspects their real objective is to prevent the Iranian nation from ever enjoying the benefits that may be derived from nuclear energy.

US Signals Flexibility on Darfur Peace Force

more - osint - The United States signaled flexibility Thursday on the shape of a new international peacekeeping force for Darfur. The Sudanese government has adamantly opposed the introduction of a United Nations force for the war-torn western region. The Bush administration had long been pressing for deployment of a full-fledged blue-hatted United Nations peacekeeping mission for Darfur. But it is now signaling its willingness to consider modifications in order to help overcome the Khartoum government's adamant opposition to a U.N. force. The U.N. Security Council approved the peacekeeping mission August 31 to help implement the Darfur peace accord reached in May, and to build on the African Union observer mission in the region which has been plagued by financial and logistical problems.
